Alerts: Policy & Permission Changes
Browser extensions change what they can do with your data — often quietly, in a privacy-policy update or a new permission added in an automatic update. We snapshot those records for the 346 browser extensions we track and compare every new version against the last. When something material changes, it shows up here and on the extension's report. Extensions removed from the store entirely are on the shutdown tracker.
What we keep watch on
For each extension, we re-fetch and diff three records on a schedule:
- Privacy policy — what's collected, how long it's kept, whether your browsing data is shared, and who it's shared with.
- Permissions & manifest — new permissions or host access requested, broader access to your tabs, history or cookies, and changes to the manifest version.
- Publisher & store listing — a change of developer, a renamed or relisted extension, and changes to the declared data-use disclosures.
What we flag as an alert
Not every wording tweak is news. We surface the changes that actually affect your data or your safety:
- An extension requests new permissions — like reading and changing data on every site — or quietly widens its host access.
- Data collection or sharing expands — longer retention, or new third parties getting your browsing data.
- A change in the publisher or ownership behind the extension — a known route for a trusted extension to turn malicious.
- A drop in maintenance signals — abandonment, or a sudden update after a long gap.
- The listing is renamed, relisted, or removed from the store.
